There Is Power in the Blood

Church, I want to talk to you tonight about the blood. Not the sanitized, stained-glass version of the blood. The actual, literal, precious blood of Jesus Christ that flowed from His body on Calvary. Isaiah said: "He was pierced for our transgressions." Pierced. That means the blood flowed. When the soldier drove the nails through His wrists, blood flowed. When the thorns pressed into His scalp, blood flowed. When the spear was thrust into His side, blood and water flowed. And every drop of that blood was speaking. Hebrews tells us that the blood of Jesus "speaks a better word than the blood of Abel." Abel's blood cried out for vengeance. The blood of Jesus cries out for mercy. Abel's blood said: "Guilty!" The blood of Jesus says: "Forgiven!" And that blood has not stopped speaking. It is speaking right now. Over your sin — forgiven. Over your sickness — healed. Over your bondage — broken. Over your family — covered. The old hymn says it right: "Would you be free from the burden of sin? There's power in the blood, power in the blood. Would you o'er evil a victory win? There's wonderful power in the blood." That is not nostalgia. That is theology. The blood of Jesus Christ is the most powerful substance in the universe, and it was poured out on Good Friday for you.
Isaiah 53:5Hebrews 12:241 Peter 1:18-19

The Cross Defeated the Enemy

Colossians 2:15 says: "Having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross." The cross was not a defeat. It was a victory. Satan thought he was winning on Good Friday. He thought the death of Jesus was his greatest triumph. He was wrong. Dead wrong. The cross is where Jesus stripped the powers of darkness of their authority. The word "disarmed" in the Greek is apekdusamenos — it means to strip off, to take away, to remove completely. Jesus did not weaken the enemy. He disarmed him. The weapons Satan used against you — guilt, shame, accusation, fear of death — were all taken out of his hands at Calvary. "It is finished" is not just about the debt of sin. It is about the defeat of Satan. When Jesus spoke those words, every demon in hell heard it. Every principality trembled. Every power that had held humanity in bondage since the Garden of Eden received its eviction notice. Church, the enemy is still active — but he is disarmed. He is a defeated foe doing his final damage. And the authority to resist him, to bind him, to silence his lies — that authority was purchased at the cross. The blood gives you the power. The cross gives you the authority. And "It is finished" means the enemy's time is up.
Colossians 2:15Revelation 12:11John 19:30

Apply the Blood Tonight

The blood of the Passover lamb had to be applied. God told the Israelites: kill the lamb, take the blood, and apply it to the doorposts. The lamb's death was not enough — the blood had to be applied. And when the angel of death saw the blood, he passed over. Good Friday is our Passover. The Lamb has been slain. The blood has been shed. But it must be applied. Not automatically. Not passively. Actively. By faith. You must take the blood of Jesus and apply it to your life — to your sins, to your family, to your home, to your future. "By his wounds we are healed." That healing is not just spiritual — it is physical, emotional, relational, financial. The cross covers everything because the blood covers everything. So tonight, I am not asking you to just sit and remember. I am asking you to receive. Apply the blood. Plead the blood of Jesus over your marriage. Plead the blood over your children. Plead the blood over your health. Plead the blood over every lie the enemy has spoken over your life. Because when the blood is applied, the enemy cannot stay. When the blood is applied, sickness has to bow. When the blood is applied, chains have to break. There is power — wonder-working power — in the precious blood of the Lamb. It is finished. The blood has been shed. Now apply it. And watch what God does.
Exodus 12:7-13Isaiah 53:5Revelation 12:11

Applications

  • 1Plead the blood of Jesus over one specific area of your life tonight. Name it. Declare the blood over it. The cross gives you the authority.
  • 2Remember: the enemy is disarmed. He is a defeated foe. Resist him with the authority purchased at Calvary, and he will flee.
  • 3Sing "Nothing but the Blood" or "There Is Power in the Blood" this week. Let the hymn remind you of what the cross accomplished.
  • 4Share the victory of the cross with someone who is under attack. The blood of Jesus is not just for you — it is for everyone who will apply it.

Prayer Suggestions

  • Lord Jesus, Your blood speaks. It speaks forgiveness over our sin, healing over our bodies, freedom over our bondage. We receive it tonight.
  • We declare: the enemy is disarmed. Satan, you were defeated at Calvary. Your weapons are stripped. Your authority is broken. The blood of Jesus silences you.
  • We apply the blood over our families, our homes, our health, our futures. Where the blood is applied, the enemy cannot stay.
  • It is finished. The Lamb has been slain. The blood has been shed. We plead the blood. We stand on the cross. And we declare victory. In Jesus' mighty name. Amen.

The Ten Commandments (1956)

In The Ten Commandments, the Israelites apply the blood of the lamb to their doorposts — and the angel of death passes over. The blood was not decorative. It was functional. It was the difference between death and life. Good Friday is the ultimate Passover: the Lamb has been slain, and the blood has been shed. But it must be applied. By faith. To your life. When the blood of Jesus is on the doorpost of your heart, the destroyer cannot enter.

Pastoral

The enemy is disarmed. He is a defeated foe doing his final damage. The authority to resist him was purchased at the cross. Use it.

Edgy

Satan thought Good Friday was his greatest triumph. It was his worst defeat. He killed the Son of God and lost everything. The cross is God's ambush.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Pentecostal theology emphasize "the blood"?

Pentecostal/Charismatic theology emphasizes the blood of Jesus as the source of spiritual power, protection, and authority. Based on Revelation 12:11 ("They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb"), the blood is seen as both the payment for sin and the weapon against spiritual forces of darkness. "Pleading the blood" is the practice of declaring the blood's power over specific situations.

What does it mean that Satan was "disarmed" at the cross?

Colossians 2:15 says Christ "disarmed the powers and authorities" through the cross. This means the weapons Satan used against humanity — guilt, shame, accusation, fear of death — were removed at Calvary. Satan is still active but no longer armed. Believers have authority through the cross and the blood to resist and overcome him.
