Water Baptism: Obedience and New Life

The Day of Pentecost was a day of baptisms. Peter preached, the crowd was "cut to the heart," and Peter gave the command: "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins." Three thousand were baptized that day. For Pentecostals and charismatics, water baptism is not a footnote to salvation — it is the first public act of the new believer, commanded by Jesus and practiced by the apostles from Pentecost forward. [CANDIDATE_NAME] goes into this water today in obedience to that same command. The same Spirit who moved on the day of Pentecost moves today. The same grace offered then is offered now. But water baptism, powerful as it is, is only the beginning of the baptismal experience. Jesus Himself said it: "John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." Two baptisms. Both real. Both promised. Both necessary for the fullness of Christian life.
Acts 2:38Matthew 3:11Acts 10:44-48

The Two Waves

When you stand at the ocean's edge, two things happen: the wave comes to you, and then the tide comes in. Water baptism is the wave — it washes, buries, and raises. Spirit baptism is the tide — it fills, empowers, and overflows. Both are water. Both are grace. Both are necessary for the full experience of what God has promised. [CANDIDATE_NAME] steps into the wave today. The tide is also available.

Spirit Baptism: Empowered for Witness

Jesus told His disciples: "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." The baptism of the Holy Spirit is not about personal comfort or spiritual experience for its own sake. It is about power for mission. In classical Pentecostal theology, Spirit baptism is a distinct experience following conversion — a filling and empowering with the Holy Spirit, evidenced by speaking in other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance. This follows the pattern of Pentecost itself, where the disciples were filled and immediately began to speak in languages they had never learned, proclaiming the mighty works of God. In charismatic theology, the emphasis is on the ongoing release and activation of the Spirit's gifts for the building up of the Body and the reaching of the world. Whether you emphasize the initial evidence or the ongoing experience, the center is the same: the Holy Spirit is not a comfort — He is a commission. He fills you to send you.
Acts 1:8Acts 2:4Acts 10:44-46

Resurrection Life: Walking in the Spirit

Romans 6 describes the baptized life as resurrection life. "Count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus." This is not merely a legal declaration — in Pentecostal theology, it is an experiential reality. The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you and gives life to your mortal body. The Spirit-filled life is a life of signs and wonders — not because miracles are the goal, but because the Kingdom has come, and the Spirit's presence makes Kingdom reality available in the present age. Prayer is answered. The sick are healed. The bound are set free. The lost are found. This is normal Christianity in the Spirit-filled tradition. [CANDIDATE_NAME] enters this water and rises into resurrection life. The old, defeated, sin-bound life is left in the water. What rises is a new creation, empowered by the Spirit, sent into the world as a witness. The same Spirit who moved at Pentecost is moving today.

Applications

  • 1Do not stop at water baptism — seek the fullness of the Spirit. Ask, seek, knock. Jesus promised the Holy Spirit to those who ask (Luke 11:13).
  • 2Surrender every area of your life to the Spirit's leading — He wants to fill not just your spiritual life but your whole life.
  • 3Use your gifts for the Body — the Spirit fills you to build up others, not just to bless yourself.
  • 4Witness. Acts 1:8 says you will receive power and you will be witnesses. The Spirit's empowerment is always for mission.

Prayer Suggestions

  • Holy Spirit, fill [CANDIDATE_NAME] today. Not just with water — fill them with Yourself. Come in power as You came at Pentecost.
  • May they walk in the fullness of all You have promised — the gifts, the fruit, the power, the presence.
  • Send them from this water as witnesses — to Jerusalem (their neighborhood), Judea and Samaria (their city and region), and to the ends of the earth. You moved at Pentecost. Move again today. Amen.

A.D. The Bible Continues (2015)

The disciples in the Upper Room were not expecting fire. They were waiting — praying, trusting. And when the fire fell, they could not contain it. The streets of Jerusalem became their pulpit. That same Holy Spirit — that same fire — is available to every believer. Water baptism marks the new life. Spirit baptism lights the fire.

Classic

Spirit-filled baptism theology distinguishes water baptism (new birth, obedience, public declaration) from Spirit baptism (empowerment for witness, gifts of the Spirit, fullness of God's presence) — both commanded, both available, both necessary.

Pastoral

[CANDIDATE_NAME] goes into the water today following Jesus and three thousand souls at Pentecost. This is the oldest command in the church. And the Spirit who filled those first disciples is just as present, just as powerful, just as available today.

Edgy

If water baptism buries the old you, Spirit baptism ignites the new you. One puts the old life under. The other lights the new life on fire. Don't settle for half the blessing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between water baptism and Spirit baptism in Pentecostal theology?

Water baptism is the believer's immersion following conversion, declaring new birth and obedience. Spirit baptism is a subsequent empowerment with the Holy Spirit for witness and ministry, initially evidenced by speaking in tongues.

Is speaking in tongues required evidence of Spirit baptism?

Classical Pentecostals teach that speaking in tongues is the initial evidence of Spirit baptism (Acts 2:4). Charismatic theology generally holds that tongues is one sign among others, but not the only or required evidence.
